Our Mission

The Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary is dedicated to the care and well-being of parrots and other exotic birds. We do not breed, sell, trade, or offer for adoption the birds in our care. Instead, we endeavor to provide them with a permanent home that allows them to mingle with other compatible birds in outdoor open-flight aviaries. We also strive to provide permanent, caring home for birds with special needs, including those with physical challenges or behavioral issues. Finally, we are committed to raising public awareness regarding the moral responsibilities and physical demands of keeping parrots or other wild animals as pets.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT

With millions of parrots produced by the pet trade each year, the population of captive birds continues to grow. This excessive breeding of parrots has become a heartbreaking tragedy. With life spans of up to 100 years, parrots have a built-in homeless factor which means almost every longlived parrot will outlive its original guardian. FEBS was established for the purpose of helping as many of these parrots as possible.

Their names are Razzle & Dazzle, appropriate for the largest of the Macaws. These majestic birds we purchased 23 years ago and were set up to breed. They had a good life in a beautiful South Carolina home but have lived their entire life indoors. Until now. The elderly couple that were their previous caretakers wished for them to retire to Florida, in the sunshine, outside and in a large Aviary of their own. We were happy to accommodate them, as we have over 800 other souls in our care!

Razzle & Dazzle were released into their huge new flight cage and immediately went to the highest perches, it has taken a few days of climbing ladders to hand feed them in order to assist them in the acclimation of such a large space.

After only a few days one brave girl, Sam, offered her arm to Dazzle and she stepped right up! The previous owner was amazed at that since it has been so long since this pair had any human contact.

Just 10 days in, both are doing fantastic, our staff and volunteers are all talking and interacting with them. Joe, a long time volunteer near and dear to us, designed and installed a pully feeding system for ease of getting the various foods up to them. They have a very high fat diet, including macadamia nuts shipped in from Hawaii that will be donated by the previous owners!

Razzle and Dazzle seem to love their afternoon mists, the high humidity and afternoon rain, it is a joy to see them enjoying retirement at our Sanctuary!

Welcome to Florida!

Sanctuary Life Reimagined

We have only just begun to re-IMAGINE the programs and facilities that we are adding to our new grounds. We are reaching out to an ever-widening span of partners and benefactors. Of course, we will continue to have volunteer opportunities to care for and feed the parrots — over 700 already. As always, newcomers come to us on a regular basis and this means that we must be prepared to expand.

Placing your bird

The Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary understands both the challenges of exotic bird ownership and the difficult decision to place your Birds in a Sanctuary setting.  We are here to be the forever home for your birds where they live free in flight aviaries, interacting with their own kind and where they can stay in a permanent environment for the remainder of their lives. You may follow your bird’s progression at Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary as they go through a closely monitored acclimation process.  The goal is to have your Parrot in a natural Free Flight Aviary, bonded with another of their own choosing, and then released as a group to avoid “lowest on the pecking order syndrome”.

Become a volunteer

Volunteering at our Sanctuary located in Hudson Florida makes a real difference in the lives of our birds and allows you to meet others who love birds while having some fun!  We always can use your extra hands to assist our hard-working staff with the daily care of the birds, or to lend a hand with other sanctuary work, including cage maintenance, toy hanging and putting up temporary cages to flower/tree planting and fund raising events.

Our Volunteer hours are seven days a week from 10am – 4pm. If you are interested in our volunteer program, the next step is to complete a Volunteer Application by clicking the link below.
