Our next resident we would like to introduce you to is Fenix. Fenix is a Military Macaw who has been with FEBS for 7 years now.
He came to us because his dad could not take care of him any longer due to health issues. Fenix is one of 74 Macaws that we have in the large flight cage here at FEBS.
He LOVES fruit days at FEBS because that’s when they all get fed bowls of fresh fruit and shredded coconut!
Military Macaws like Fenix originate in Central and Northern South America and can reach sizes of 30 inches from their beak to the end of their tail feathers. They can also have a wingspan of over 40 inches and live up to 50 or more years!
Military Macaws are very social, VERY vocal and have a reputation for being pleasant and even-tempered pets when properly socialized and hand-fed as babies. They are also very curious and love interacting with their human friends.
Their diet consists of seeds, berries, nuts, fruits and vegetables and it’s really important that they get a minimum of 2-4 hours of playtime in their cages each day where they can fly, play, stretch and exercise their beaks. Their playtime also provides mental stimulation which keeps them healthy and happy.
It’s important to bear in mind that if you are looking to bring a Military Macaw into your family that you have to dedicate a lot of time to interacting and caring for them as well as be cognizant of the fact that they do have a lifespan of over 50 years. Make sure that you can deal with that and make sure you have a plan in place in the event that something happens and you can no longer care for your feathered friend.
FEBS can provide shelter and care for those birds that need a new place to live as well as other services to help in the event of changing situations that require a bird to be given up.
