Piedmont is a 37-year-old Umbrella Cockatoo who was brought to FEBS several years ago by his parronts Carol and Jay from Michigan. Carol ran into Piedmont at a pet store where she went for supplies. She went home and then an hour later returned to take Piedmont home as she felt a special bond with the bird while she was there.
He was with Carol and Jay for 32 years and they had always wanted him to be a bird, spread his wings and be around other birds which is what brought them to FEBS. Piedmont had started plucking but since we acclimated him to a large flight aviary with 9 other female cockatoos he seems to be doing just fine.
He even has a girlfriend named Duchess who protects him when anyone dares to come to close, though Piedmont loves his pets and love that he gets during daily feedings. Since Piedmont was introduced to the new flight, his chest feathers have started to grow out. He must have some pretty big wings to be the only man in with 9 female cockatoos!
All the ladies love him and he flies from perch to perch saying hi to all the girls. We are looking to acclimate another 1 or 2 females and one other laid back male Umbrella Cockatoo.
